Imagine one day you wake up, and the streets of your little neighborhood are simply overflowing with police and emergency vehicles, and your sidwalks are being patrolled by SWAT officers holding huge rifles.
You probably would not want to become involved in a nine-hour standoff. But what if the police came to you and said they needed you to open your garage door so they could use your home as a command center, to get in out of the torrential rain? Would you refuse them, in one of the worst storms to ever hit the Valley? Even to stop barricatded suspects with weapons, which is one of the most dangerous situations police officers ever have to face?
If you are a proud citizen of the United States, you probably would nor refuse.
What then if they allowed more than a thousand dollars worth of harm to come to your garage door, and ruined your garage for the next two months?
Well, you'd probably be pretty upset. Especially if the police claimed they were not liable for the damage.
This occurred to one homeowner in the Los Angeles area, and he very quickly offered the police his home in their time of need, and they caused several thousand dollars worth of damage. Luckily, the LAPD there decided, out of the kindness of their hearts, to pay for the repair of the garage. But they were still legally not liable, they said. And in the future, the city is not responsible for any damages caused by the police that any innocent citizen might suffer as a consequence of police investigation. So if your home gets riddled with bullet holes in the middle of a police and criminal shootout, you are S.O.L.
As a side note, that specific incident did not end happily, because the owners of the apartment where the standoff was occurring got away. The suspects were not brought to justice.
