A new fashion trend (in mostly non-suburbian areas) is to paint murals or designs on homeowners' garage doors. These can range from an epic Star Wars mural with C-3PO and R2D2 and Princess Leia and Han Solo and Luke Skywalker all in a huge cool battle, all the way to a painting of an ocean with a little white speck of a sailboat, flapping in the wind. Some people paint scenes of spring with hills and sunshine and flowers and bumblebees on the wind. Some have even gotten murals of their family members, although that can very easily go awry, with facial expressions that border on the demonic instead of charming.
My very favorite garage door painting and or mural that I have ever come across was on a garage down in a little town somewhat near Santa Barbara on the coast. The family that lived in the house was a little eccentric, but in a very nice way. They were all writers, somehow, and all really into the arts and being strange and appreciating comedy. Really funny family, in general.
But the mural on the door was a mural done by a bunch of kindergarteners using finger paint. It's a mish mash of blue and yellow and green and all the colors of nature and when you're up close itjust looks liek a vaguely glittery mess that some four year old decided to make on the wall, but when you back up the painting resolves into an image of a lake with birds and llamas. It's rather amazing and very non-sequitor and the sense of humor is off, but it's totally a masterpiece.
When I first saw it I couldn't believe my eyes, but apparently the weather doesn't affect it and so it will probably last forever. At least as long as that family's kids are alive.
