Lena Senlin paints garage doors for a living. She take clients in a lot of inner city areas, who have metal garage doors, but also some suburban homes too. Her service is run form her own garage too. She keeps a lot of paints and brushes and inspirational images in her garage.
She gets calls from all kinds of clientele, from upper-crust suburban housewives looking for a tasteful addition to their homes, to downtown tradesman looking for cool, indie advertising. Some of her favorite works include painting Starry Night on a new york storefront, an intricate imagining of the Garden of Eden on the home of one woman in Irvine, and a simple, futuristic motif on several doors in a pizza parlor.
She charges by time spent, amount of work, and the amount of supplies she'll need to complete the project.
This is a pretty rare service, and Senlin says she does not really have a lot of competitors. She fields about five or six jobs a month, which is pretty impressive, considering the scope of her works. She has a very high satisfaction rate.
Most people probably would not be willing to shell out money for a mural on their home front, but some people are willing to stray off the beaten path, and go for something a little more idiosyncratic.
Of course you can always try to paint your garage door yourself, especially if it's a wood-paneled door. Wood is a fairly simple material to work with, compared with synthetic blends or even metals. All you need is a bottom coat and a sealant to make sure your paint doesn't start chipping too soon.
As for inspiration, pick images you'll love day in and day out. Suns, stars, trees, fish, blue skies. Whatever floats your boat. Ultimately, it's your home.
