A county police department in south carolina has recently arrested a fifty-something year old man as a suspect in a case of several open garage door robberies in the last year. A spokesman for the police department said that the man (Oswood Sylvester Holmes) was going to be charged on several counts of second degree burglary, two counts of obtaining stolen goods, and petty larceny. The time he may serve if convicted is undetermined, but would likely be five to ten with options for parole.
During November and December of last year (2010), police detectives in the area started investigating the case when several suburban homes were robbed. Homeowners reported having things taken right out of their open garage doors, and finding damage to some of their things. Among the items stolen were expensive tools and gardening supplies, bikes, gym equipment, and even several pieces of furniture. How the suspect managed to remove so many large items is a bit of a mystery. The investigation used eyewitness testimony and forensic evidence to pinpoint Holmes as the suspect. He was arrested last week and taken into custody at the J. Long Detention Center.
The police department is now reminding garage owners to keep their garage doors closed when they are not actively using them, even if they are home. It's hard to remember to do this- you never think of getting robbed while you're home. But it's actually not uncommon for things to go missing even when the home owner is not out of town or out of the house. You can further deter theft by purchasing and using an extra garage door padlock. Or getting a really big, mean German Shepherd. That tends to work, too.
