Small Halloween Projects for a Garage

Halloween is coming. Planning ahead can make any decorating or party planning go much smoother. Bobbing for apples is easy and only requires a big bucket and a bag of apples, but a little time can turn any garage door into a pathway to a haunted playground.

Bean bag toss games are always fun and the supplies can be found in the recycling bin. Collect coffee tins and simply spray paint them a uniform color. Six places in a triangle can provide a game suitable for any ages. Yogurt cups and ping pong balls can make the game table sized.

Plastic poker chips can be marked and dug into a tub of dirt. Digging out the right chip could win a child a flowering bulb. Include some of the dirt from the bin at the end or simply spread it out on the lawn.

A table in the garage is perfect for carving jack-o-lanterns. If a child in the house is too young to handle a knife, allow them to paint the pumpkin's face. A parent can spray some sealant on it to protect it from the rain, or let it wash off and hand them the paints again. Any old curtains or sheets could be taped to the floor of the garage and driven over for a few days to dramatically age them. Dunk them in some cold water with a mild hand washing detergent and then hang them for a great effect in a party room. The washing will fade the stains some and reduce any bad smells. Cheese cloth can also be soaked in strong tea or coffee to discolor them and then ripped up for a haunted abandoned look.

Any plans to host a party in the garage should also inspire a cleaning of the space. A fake rat on the wall is decoration; a real bug problem is not. Take a moment before the weather gets too cold to sweep and then hose off the floor of the garage. Check any fluids found on the ground. Air conditioning systems often leave water from condensation, but if the liquid has any color or viscosity, the can should be taken in for an inspection. The same could be said of the whole garage door system. A garage door service should be performed every once in a while to keep wheels turning smoothly.

Some folks don't celebrate Halloween for various reasons, but anyone can appreciate the cooling weather and the great opportunity to get out of doors for a party and a garage is always a good back-up plan for a rained out outdoor party. A clean garage can be simply an extension of the home and not simply extra storage.
