Everyday a person might check the classifieds or job sites.
At some point, though, the resumes and applications will have been sent out for
the day and there will still be still more hours to be filled. There is only so
much time you can spend testing the garage door openers safety signals. Anyone
who is unemployed or simply underemployed knows those next hours have to be
spent as productively as possible.
Volunteering at a youth center or another favorite charity
can help expand a person’s horizons and provide new perspective. While keeping
any holes in the resume plugged. A person can also bring attention to skills
that were not highlighted already on that same resume. Many argue that jobs are
more easily found by word of mouth. A person needs to be visible; seen not just
actively looking for a job, but being active in the community. Perhaps someone in that same community will
think of that person when writing a job description, or if possible simply hire
them directly. Many charities are also experiencing budget shortfalls this year
and would benefit from a wide variety of help from landscaping to accounting.
Fundraising is always a special need, but some simply need bodies to man tables
at information fairs.
If helping outside the home is not an option consider adding
value to the home itself. Many consider maintenance a nuisance, but a book from
the local library can provide all sorts of information and can break it down
into simple steps. These tasks like cleaning the coils of a refrigerator and
resealing a deck can maintain the structure of a home. Learning to cook meals at home can also help
budgets balance. Perhaps the yard has started to go bald in places. Perhaps too
much clutter has collected around the edges of the garage. Perhaps organizing a
neighborhood tag sale would be the best use of someone’s time. A couple well placed ads and a few pieces of
poster board can help clean out space either behind the garage door or in the
attic. The more houses involved the more word of mouth advertising chances.
If yard sales are not practical, but the clutter is in good
condition take good photos and post the items on Ebay or Craigslist. Many part
time jobs have been created as folks with time on their hands use that time to
sell the unwanted objects in their lives. The extra space created behind the
garage door might be better used housing a cottage industry online.
As this recovery slowly overtakes America use any extra time
being unemployed or underemployed exploring new skills and assets. The country
has built a lot of wealth from an idea created behind a garage door.
