Why to Choose a Custom Wood Garage Door

When shopping for a garage door replacement, the materials that the door will be made of is an important consideration.  Residences located in regions where the temperatures remain mild year round can often get by with non-insulated doors.  If the garage door installation will be on a home located in a region that regularly has cold winters or very hot summers, insulated garage doors are more appropriate.  Many homeowners seek custom wood garage doors for their beauty, but the benefits and drawbacks should be considered before making a final garage door replacement purchase.

Wood is a lovely natural material and is easy to work with, making it popular for creating custom garage doors.  When the aesthetic and curb appeal of the home are of tantamount importance (and when are they are not?), custom wood doors can really improve the look of a house.  But being a natural material doesn't mean that wood does not have certain drawbacks.

Wood contracts in dry and cold weather conditions, and expands in hot, humid, and wet conditions.  These natural changes make wood doors more susceptible to cracks and gaps than many other garage door materials.  Sun, rain, and ice all beat down on garage doors and tend to create fading on wooden doors.  In order to protect wood doors from wear and tear caused by the elements, they must be resealed or repainted approximately every two years.  The naturally occurring changes in the wood can also cause paint to chip, so it is important that annual maintenance be observed and completed appropriately.  Professional garage door services can be hired to provide regular maintenance of the doors, but homeowners who choose the wood option should be prepared to do a bit of maintenance work so as to preserve the beauty of the wooden doors.

While beauty is the most obvious benefit of wood as a door material, the ease with which is it worked is what makes wood a great material.  Wood gives homeowners the option to have windows in the garage doors of nearly any shape and style imaginable.  Matching the garage door windows to those on the rest of the home helps maintain a cohesive look across the structure.  Custom wood garage doors can also be designed to work in a selection of ways.  They can be sectional, and open with an overhead automatic garage door opener.  They can also be in one piece and tilt up to open.  Carriage house style doors open from the center out.  Still yet, custom wood garage doors can even be hung to slide sideways, much like wooden doors commonly found in barns.  They can also be stained to create a rich natural look, or painted any color available.

It is up to the homeowner to decide whether custom wood garage doors are worth the regular maintenance and upkeep in order to get custom beauty for the home's exterior.  Of course, beauty isn't everything.  For many, the appeal of custom wood doors is the ability to select how the door will function.  Functionality often wins out over beauty.

How to Renovate the Garage from Door to Floor

Most people who were contemplating selling their homes and
trading their single car garage for a double garage door have realized they are
going to have to hold out longer for equity to develop. That doesn't mean they
can't make the present home could be seen as new. Among the fun parts of a new
house is the additional facelift owners will give the home to improve its sale
price.

Selling a family house doesn't have to be the only real
motive to think to develop the garage space. Take a weekend and make it more
inviting and accessible. First clean up every little thing in the garage.
Storage tubs come in handy here, otherwise several boxes should get everything
packed away. Create a mental inventory. Is the existing storage enough? Is new
shelving or perhaps a cabinet needed? If a few of the stored items are large
and but light, check out the ceiling for storage. Above the garage door is a
perfect spot to store skies, sleds, and inflatable pools. Make absolutely sure
that they don't get in the way of the garage door opener. A local store should
to offer the hooks or braces for nearly any storage need.

Take a moment to inspect the garage door opener. If it's
really old or noisy could it use a tune up or would a replacement be better?
Consider the garage door itself. Should it be cleaned? Perhaps a new coat of
paint? Consider having a garage door service inspect it.

If the space really needs an update consider paint. Use a
durable paint, and consider that most people hardly ever want to repaint their garage doors or the interior so get this one to count. There are paints for the floor which will bond
with concrete after which it will resist future oil and water.

When all this work is complete, bring the boxes back and
find a place for everything and put everything in its place. Things that do not
have a place should be marked clearly on the exterior with a note to discard
after a year on unuse.

To Window or Not to Window the Garage Door

If one's garage
door
is looking a little worn or damaged, consider all the options before
buying the new door.

First walk around
the neighborhood. Take a good look at the garage doors, particularly any that
look interesting. One can learn a lot through observation. If one garage door
really seems striking, take a photo. Hair salons have recommended this option
for years, and hair will grow out if a bad choice is made. A garage door is a
much bigger investment.

With the favorite
styles in hand call or visit the website of a garage door installation and service company and take a look at all
the options. Most garage doors are made in sectional pieces. These can be mixed
and matched to form a unique look.  Some
doors will even have the illusion of being single or double barn style doors,
while they actually are 3 or 4 pieces that roll up in the same fashion of a
modern garage door.

The choice of
color and exterior material style is very important. Which door was the most
inviting? Did some part of the door seem to distract from the rest of the home.
Some neighborhoods when constructed all at the same time tend to blend
together; a distinct door can help visitors remember a place. If resale of the
home is an important consideration, take a moment to think about what will
attract a buyer. Too much distinction can back fire.

Once the material
is decided one will find the options for thickness of insulation arising. If
one has particularly cold or hot seasons then good insulation is important. One
also needs to think about alternate uses of the space. If the garage will only
store cars then good weatherization is not as important as it would be for a
workshop or gym. A garage particularly one that is adjacent to the home will
benefit from any extra climatizing. One doesn't always know the needs of a
space next year or even 5 years from now.

The top panel is
where one would likely place a window. Here one can use rounded window frames
to create the illusion of an archway. Not everyone wants a window in the
garage. Windows are easier to break with errant baseballs and allow passersby
or prowlers to see if the cars are in the garage or not. Windows do allow for
extra light inside and frosted glass can be used for the security minded. They
can help the garage, now a central feature in the front of many houses to blend
in with the rest of the homes facade.

The lower panels decoration style is truly just that, a matter of style. Different homeowners will have different opinions regarding what looks right. Simple, plain doors may blend in with the neighborhood. More decorative styles can bring the personality of the homeowner outside.

A garage door
replacement
is a big decision. It is the largest, removable piece of the many
houses. One might decide to add siding or replace the roof, but it would be
hard to find any other purchase that can transform the outside of a house so
drastically.

When a Garage Door is not Just for Admitting Cars

Some garage doors
do a lot more than admit cars. Some folks never pull their vehicles into the
garage, they don't have the space. Garages have become the work shop and
storage space of the home. If there is not any other “unfinished” space for
woodworking or working out then the garage can become the perfect space. Some
folks may turn it into a boys club house even.

The type of door
in this space might be important then. Perhaps one needs to install a screen
door to allow fresh air in and keep the bugs out.

If the space is
going to be used regularly, then a good scrub to the walls might be
appropriate. If a scrub won't be enough a coat of paint can provide a facelift
for the entire space. An epoxy floor coating can cover over years of neglect
without making the space feel to finished for messier tasks. If a workout space
is going to be created try the rubber connecting floor mats.

Perhaps all that
is needed is a seasonal spot for socializing. Hooks on the walls can hold
chairs and tables out of the way and yet a sweep of the floor and a outdoor
carpet piece can transform the garage into a pleasant patio space. As with any
transition time, perhaps it would be a good time to contact a garage door
service to make sure the door is functioning properly. Just as one checks the
batteries in the smoke detectors with the change of daylight savings, having
the garage door inspected is a piece of occasional maintenance often forgotten.
If the budget allows and the opener is particularly old or noisy, it could be
replaced with a more modern quieter style.

Some homeowners
never manage to pull the car through the garage door for another reason. It
starts with a box or three of Christmas decorations. Then a box of seasonal
clothes never manages to get brought in and is forgotten to time. If old
discarded toys are filling up the space where the car should go, and one is
annoyed another winter went by without ever finding time to make room for the
car, perhaps a yard sale would be good idea. Remember that many charity shops
will even come for a pickup.

Summer is a great
time to go through these boxes and one days work can be rewarded with a winter
where one doesn't have to scrape snow and ice off the car.

Sometimes garages are
used for something a little more classicly minded. Classic Rock that is. If
there is a musician in the household, particularly a drummer, the instrument
will likely find itself relegated to the garage. If this occurs sound proofing
may be in order. If the primary obligation is to protect the home from the
sounds of the budding musician then check that first the walls were finished in
the first place. Some garages will only have cement walls, adding in the wood
frame and then insulation and drywall will go a long way towards proving a
sound barrier. The garage door will be a problem and any good sound proofing
will generally render the door inoperable until it is removed.

Garage Door Opener Remotes

Posted by Amy on Tuesday, 22 June 2010

Did the garage
door opener
remote somehow fall under the brake pedal just as it was
depressed?  Of course it could have
simply fallen unaware into the lap as one steps out to shop. However the
remotes break or get lost it could happened to anyone. That is why there are
remotes available for purchase from any dealer of garage door openers.

One can simply
call a garage door service to come and program a new remote, but some people
want to do it themselves.

The first step to
adding or replacing any garage door remote is to identify the make and model of
the opener. If the manual that came with your opener is not available a ladder
will be required. Two persons would make this an easy job as one climbs and
reads and the other writes and verifies. Check first with the store where the
opener was purchased. If one bought the house or it was installed by the
builders go to the garage door service company for help finding appropriate
remotes. There are also a number of Universal remotes sold at hardware stores
that are compatible with the major opener manufacturers.

The opener will
have instructions for programming it. This may also require a helper to
activate a working remote in order for the new opener to learn the frequency of
the remote. Please note that when you program the opener you are really wiping
the memory clean of all remotes and you will have to add back all the remotes
you want to work with the system. This is true of the wireless remote that
often located on the outside of the garage for keyless entry as well as the
button inside located near the door to the house.  Most openers can only be programmed with the
frequency of 5 remotes, so unless one has multiple copies of the car keys for
multiple drivers one should be fine.

Remotes have
gotten more complex, some will turn on lights or open multiple doors with
different buttons. One may also have remote as part of a cars system. Don't get
over excited about buttons, and fancy features keychain style or car mounted
remotes are easily lost or broken.   Also
if one does have a remote attached to the keys; please keep extra careful watch
on the keys. Children love pushing buttons and it would be a shame to leave the
garage door open all night because of a busy set of fingers. Also remember  that any garage door safety feature can be
knocked out of place or fail to catch some movement vital to the safety of a
small child or animal. Car mounted remote openers are safer. There is very
little reason to open the garage from any room in the house, unless one is very
fast at hopping into a car and buckling up the door should have plenty of time
to raise itself.

Next time that
garage door opener remote gets crunched or slips away unnoticed in the parking lot, look at it as
an adventure and get programming.
