Building a garage is hard work involving weeks of planning and
construction, as well as pure physical strength. You need to obtain a legal
building permit, obtain materials and a workforce, and make sure you have the
correct tools.
Another (more exciting) part of the planning process
involves deciding what you want the garage door to look like and how you want it to function- we usually think
of the door as the be-all and end-all of the garage, but in this case it’s more
of the small garnish that makes the dish. You’ll want it to match the style of
your house but bring fresh color or design to the façade, instead of just
blending in with the whole house and making it look too big and boxy.
Another huge issue to consider is whether or not you want to
attach your garage to your house- there is convenience in that, meaning you don’t
have to go outside between your car and your home, your groceries are that much
closer to the kitchen, your car is protected from thieves. But on the other
hand, garage doors can be something of a security risk. It’s a very large
opening, and even the best lock technology won’t be able to stop a thief from
bashing in the door.
