An incident in Virginia occurred in December that brought the issue of military-controlled garage door opener frequencies to a head. An entire town near the Marine facility in Quantico had to buy all-new garage door openers because of the military's use of the frequencies. They were not offered reimbursement for the expenses.
A spokesperson for the Marine base made no apologies, stating that such consumer devices with wireless transmission capabilities are all unlicensed users of what essentially belongs to the government. They have to accept the preemptive usage of the spectrum by the licensed users, aka, the Department of Defense.
While disruption of garage door functions can be problematic enough, one must wonder if this blanket statement about "consumer devices" would apply to something like cell phones in the future. If cell phone connectivity were suddenly compromised due to usurping by the military, it could lead to a very dangerous situation, both practically and politically.
We can only hope that the higher ups at the Department of Defense are wise enough to never allow that to happen. The immediate danger and the doubtless angry backlash could be very dangerous.
Unfortunately, no member of the garage door installation industry can make a move to help the situation, as there is currently no process by which a civilian may obtain licensing for use of the frequency spectrum.
