Wood was the original building material of yesteryears, and is still the most popular material used for garage doors to this day. But in this day and age, one can very easily buy a door that is made of aluminum, or steel, or fiberglass, or a composite. So why stick with wood? Why branch out?

Pros:

One of the great things about wooden garage doors is the ability to customize them. Other materials are usually produces as manufactured standardized sizes and styles. If you don't have a standard sized garage opening, or you want something extra, this can be a problem. But not with wood!

Wooden garage doors also don't dent. If your kids play rough basketball games in the driveway, an aluminum door won't last long. Wood also stands up to scratches and scrapes better than doors that use fiberglass.

The most appealing aspect of wooden doors is their charming look.

Cons:

Wood tends to have a very low value for insulation- steel doors can be insulated easily and cheaply, but now wood.

Wooden doors are also trickier to maintain. You can't just wipe them down, and moisture ma cause rot, or you may even get a termite infestation. Or, on the other hand, if you live in a dry area, they may dry out and start to crack.
