Choosing The Right Garage Door

Heading

Choosing The Right Garage Door For Your Home

Shopping for Garage Doors does not have to be a complicated ordeal, At Mesa we understand that buying a garage door is a significant investment for your home. Your garage doors can account for up to 40 percent of the exterior portion of a home that is visible from the street. The curb appeal of your home is very much influenced by the color and style door you choose. When buying a garage door, it is important to consider the purpose of your garage. For example, if you are using it as a utility room, you probably do not need insulation. However, if you use it as a children’s play area, you might consider an insulated door.

Style

Your garage door makes up a large portion of the front of your home, therefore the style of garage door you choose should complement the entire exterior look of your home. The first thing you should consider when selecting a new garage door is the type of panel that would best suit your home. There are three basic garage door panel styles:

  • Flush panel.

Flush panels are completely flat, vaguely textured panels that can be used to complement the surrounding wall. You would use that in a situation where you want a nice looking door but do not want to draw too much attention to it.

  • Short raised panels.

A short raised panels also add depth to the door. They are perfect additions to home styles with extremely detailed trim. It is also perfect for homes that have strong architectural line like Tudor homes and symmetrical facades of colonial style homes.

  • Long raised panels.

A long raised panel gives distinction and depth to your door, and enhances the overall appearance of your home. These panels should be considered when you would like to highlight your garage door.

  • Painted raised panels.

Painted raised panels adds more pizzazz and fashion to raised panels by painting the panel in a contrasting colors.

Windows

Another way to add character to your new garage door is by adding windows. Windows are ascetically beautiful and enhances the look of your garage door and your home. Double paned windows are also a great way to allow natural light into your garage while keeping extreme seasonal temperatures out.

Size

Garage doors are offered in standard sizes. Single car garage doors are typically 8X7 and double car garage doors are usually 16X7. These sizes fit most but not all garage door openings. In the case that a standard size does not fit, then Mesa Garage Doors can customized and cut to fit the opening of your garage.

Door Materials

Garage doors are constructed out of either wood or steel.

  • Wood Garage Doors

For ultimate beauty, substance, and beautiful and classic design, a wood door is the way to go. Wood doors not only offer the beauty of natural wood, it is also available in several species, either paint or stain grade.

  • Steel Garage Doors

Steel doors are the most common type of garage doors and usually more cost-effective than wood doors. Several colors are offered for your garage door by most manufacturers. You also have the choice to paint your garage door to match your home. There are three separate types of steel doors:

    • Single layer door: Single layer steel garage doors are cut from a single sheet of galvanized steel. Singe layer doors are usually the most economical of all steel garage doors.
    • Double layer door: Double layer steel garage doors have a galvanized steel skin on the outside with a thick layer of either polystyrene or polyurethane as a backer. The backer provides additional insulation and soundproofing to the door.
    • Triple layer door: Triple layer steel garage doors are assembled of the same materials as double layer doors with the addition of a galvanized skin on the inside to preserve the polystyrene or polyurethane from damage. Because there’s an added layer of steel this makes triple layer doors the most solid, sturdy and most soundproof of all garage doors. You also have the choice to add thicker insulation for greater R-Value.

The Garage as an Extended Living Space or Workshop

As time goes on, homeowners are using their garages much more as added area of their living space: as work space, children's play areas, pastime areas, laundry rooms and other kinds of activity. While functions in the garage increases so does the need to maintain a continuous and comfortable climate in this space.

To expand the satisfactory level in your attic, walls, and crawl space, refer to the same techniques suggested in our article on home insulation in your living space. There is a space where insulation can be expanded and is energy efficient which is often overseen – your garage door. Look for a garage door with the following:

  • Good insulating qualities. Look for a door with an R-value of at least 3 in moderate to temperate climates. In harsher climates go up to an R-value of 10.
  • Sections should have weather seals. The seal may be in the form of gasket material that compresses when the door is shut or it may be designed into the mating surfaces of the panels.
  • A bottom seal/threshold should be present. If the door doesn't come standard with a bottom seal then you can add a seal to keep harsh weather like drafts and rain out.

Important!

If you have a garage-workshop, get the highest R-value you can in the door to make heating and cooling your work space easier.
